Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center Celebrates the Great Backyard Bird Count

The nationwide community science project is in its 22nd year.

Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center invites the public to participate in a full weekend of activities celebrating the 2019 Great Backyard Bird Count.

Every year over President’s Day weekend, bird-lovers and community scientists all across the country take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center is encouraging participants to enjoy the count in four additional ways over the long weekend. The center will hold free family bird walks on both Friday and Saturday, February 15 & 16, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Binoculars will be available for both guided walks.

As well as counting the birds, Spring Creek Prairie has two fun workshops all about birds in case counting outside in the Nebraska winter weather is a bit too much to handle. On Friday evening, February 15 from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.,

the center is presenting BIRDS & BREWS: For Mature “Owl"diences Only. This adult-only (21 & over) event will feature a live owl presentation followed by owl trivia themed around owl and other bird mating rituals, sexual behavior, and more. Brews will be provided by Zipline Brewing Co. of Lincoln. The cost is $15/adult.

On Sunday afternoon, February 17, the center’s resident Birdnerd, Jason, will present BIRD is the WORD, a fun and informal presentation on how many birds got their names – from crazy color and sound descriptions to the interesting people they were named after. This workshop is from 2-3:30 pm, is for all ages, and is $10/person.

Pre-registration is required for these events. Register by email at scp@audubon.org or call 402-797-2301.
