Fall migration is in full swing, and the prairie is alive with activity. The most exciting finds are probably the Smith’s Longspurs that have been recorded along the ridgetops. Other sightings have included Sedge Wrens weaving through the tall grasses, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Merlins, Northern Harriers, and American Kestrels on the hunt, and even a few elusive Sprague’s Pipits passing through. And our first Northern Shrike of the fall has been seen, proving that winter is not far off.
Sparrows are also returning in abundance. Visitors have spotted Clay-colored, Fox, Harris’s, Vesper, Savannah, LeConte’s, White-throated, and Lincoln’s sparrows throughout the trails. It’s a perfect time to grab your binoculars and enjoy the rich diversity of birds making their seasonal stop at the prairie.
