Spring Creek Prairie is participating in the launch of the Bird Migration Explorer kiosk, a pilot project to promote National Audubon Society’s interactive online tool developed to visualize the migration journeys of over 450 bird species. It combines data from various sources to show how birds travel across the Western Hemisphere, the conservation challenges they face, and how they connect to their nesting and wintering habitats. Visitors are invited to interact with the kiosk to learn about different bird species and their migratory pathways. For the next two weeks, we’re collecting important usage data—and your interaction helps us better understand how visitors engage with this powerful tool. Stop in, learn about bird migration, and be part of shaping future experiences at the prairie!
Key features of the Bird Migration Explorer kiosk:
-
Interactive Animated Maps: Visualize the migration routes of over 450 bird species.
-
Species Connections: Explore how individual birds migrate through different locations throughout the year.
-
Conservation Challenges: Learn about the threats birds face during migration, such as habitat loss and climate change.
-
Data-Driven: Based on data from numerous researchers and organizations.
Ever wonder where migratory birds found at Spring Creek Prairie go over the winter?
During Fall migration, birds like the Dickcissel are often found in the tropics of Central America – traveling thousands of miles from their nesting grounds! While they aren’t a vulnerable species, they still face conservation challenges such as degraded habitat repurposed for agriculture needs, urban sprawl, and light pollution.
The Bird Migration Explorer is designed to increase awareness of conservation challenges by engaging a wide audience with the wonders of bird migration and the science behind it.
