Ponca Camp
In partnership with the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska and funded by a TogetherGreen Innovations grant, Spring Creek Prairie hosted a 3½-day camp for Ponca youth ages 10-17 in June of 2012 and 2013. In 2012, 11 youth and 3 counselors attended the first day's activities focused on Ponca cultural language and traditions. Ed Littlecook, tribal elder from the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, and Gary Robinette, former Cultural Director for the tribe in Nebraska, were the main presenters. Steve Laravie and his family accompanied by Ed Littlecook did a traditional drumming presentation.
The remainder of the camp was spent exploring Spring Creek Prairie with insect and aquatic investigations, and constructing a living willow blind that will be available to visitors by the end of the summer. Each participant also created their own flag representing their connection to the prairie and the tribe.
