Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center will have its Salon Series on-line this year in response to the coronavirus situation. The series will be at 6:30 pm on April 9, 16 and 23 with a focus on native plants in Nebraska.

The Salon Series is a set of workshops focusing on conservation topics. Since the visitors’ center closed, Spring Creek staff decided to offer the series through Zoom (an online meeting/webinar platform) for free. Donations are welcome and all who donate over $10 with their registration will receive a free workshop book.

The first series is called Native Plant Power! focusing on the importance of having native plants to provide habitat for birds and insects, fight climate change, save on resources, and cut down on chemical usage and air pollution.

There will be three sessions in Native Plant Power!:

• April 9 will feature an overview of Audubon’s Plants for Birds program from Jason “The Birdnerd” St. Sauver.
• April 16 will be a Plants for Bugs presentation from the Xerces Society about how native plants are necessary for pollinators and other insects.
• April 23 will be an Advocating for Conservation presentation with Conservation Nebraska about how to write letters to the editor and elected officials advocating for native plants.

Jason St. Sauver, Director of Education and Outreach for Audubon Nebraska, explains that “creating more habitat for birds and bugs, especially in our urban and suburban areas, is not only important in saving many of our birds and insect friends, but it can save you money, save on resources, and be a great way to advocate for conservation at the personal and local levels.”
