Audubon Hosts Virtual, Family-friendly Event about Fireflies

Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary and Spring Creek Prairie will host Lightning Bugs LIVE! on July 12

The Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary and Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center have collaborated to create a family-friendly event surrounding fireflies. The event will be broadcasted on Sunday, July 12, through Facebook Live and Zoom starting at 8:30 pm CT.

“Since we are still preparing for future programs at the centers, we wanted to offer a fun, online event for families and anyone who loves lightning bugs,” said Beka Yates, education manager at Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary. “We hope this gets people in the spirit of summer while learning about one of our favorite invertebrates.”

The event begins at 8:30 pm CT with a short presentation through Zoom. Afterward, registrants have the option to either join Facebook Live and view fireflies light up at the centers, or they can watch lightning bugs in their own backyard or local greenspace. At 9:30 participants can rejoin Zoom to share stories and observations about colors, numbers, and types of fireflies people witnessed.

Registration is required for the Zoom portions of the program. To register, visit rowe.audubon.org/events or springcreek.audubon.org/events and select Lightning Bugs LIVE! A $5 suggested donation is greatly appreciated and will help Audubon Nebraska and the centers continue their important work for birds.
