Launch of the Big B.A.D. Birdhouse Project

A community-wide project to beautify Lincoln and promote bird habitat by designing and building birdhouses.

INTRODUCTION: It is our pleasure to announce the launch of Big B.A.D. Birdhouse Project and Competition!

About the BIG B.A.D. (BUILD AND DESIGN) BIRDHOUSE PROJECT: Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center, the American Institute of Architects-Lincoln, and community partners are coming together for a second year to bring the Big B.A.D. Birdhouse Project to Lincoln. The goals of the project are to connect project organizations with the Lincoln community, introduce concepts within art, architecture, and design, and to provide homes for birds around the city of Lincoln.

This year, there are two parts to the project: A Design Competition/ Auction for all artists, architects, and designers in all media, and Community Builds for youth and families.

COMPETITION (Artists, Architects, and Designers)

Submissions accepted starting December 1, 2022 and ending January 17, 2023.

Calling all artists, architects, and designers in all media:
Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center, AIA Lincoln, and other community partners are coming together to hold the Big B.A.D (Build and Design) Birdhouse Competition. This is an amazing opportunity for all Lincoln and surrounding area artists, architects, and designers to showcase their talent publicly. The jury will select winning birdhouse designs, and those designers, or team of designers, will be provided a $250 stipend to create their piece for an auction in March 2023. One third of auction proceeds will be given back to the designer or designing team, while the other two thirds will fund Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center’s programming for Lincoln Community Learning Centers.

More competition information and applications can be found here.

COMMUNITY BUILDS

Help build & design a bird-friendly & beautiful Lincoln!
During the months of January and February, 2023, the Big B.A.D. Birdhouse Project will host COMMUNITY BUILDS around Lincoln. Several will be specifically for youth and families at Lincoln Community Learning Centers in northeast Lincoln. The project will also host 3-5 public COMMUNITY BUILDS across Lincoln in locations TBD. These events will focus on learning about birds, bird habitat, and design from experts from partner organizations like Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center, AIA-Lincoln, and NE Game & Parks Commission.

For all COMMUNITY BUILDS, birdhouse kits, tools, and art supplies will be provided. The birdhouses from the community builds are planned to be on display at locations around Lincoln in March.
